One passionate volunteer, Sarah, first learned about Meals on Wheels Central Texas from her grandmother, Jody, who lives in Lockhart, Texas. At 97, Grandma Jody delivers meals with her local Meals on Wheels through her church group. Jody is one of the reasons Sarah feels so fondly about volunteering and connecting with her community. In fact, Sarah even started a podcast to connect with other older adults in her community.
Fascinated by the stories and wisdom Jody imparts, Sarah launched a podcast called Can I Talk to Your Grandma? where she interviews friends' grandparents and other older adults she meets. “I put flyers up in nursing homes around the community, and you would be surprised by how open they are to sharing their stories.” Sarah uses social media to share these stories, but that’s not all. Sarah also takes to social media to document her support for Meals on Wheels Central Texas.
“The people I see on my route are my regulars. I tried picking up as a substitute driver once, but it wasn’t the same for me,”she shares. After moving to East Austin, Sarah was looking for a way to connect with people around her. With a work-from-home schedule, “delivering meals at lunchtime feels like a good reset,” Sarah imparts. Every week, we look forward to her photos and videos delivering meals to our neighbors at lunchtime. Her online advocacy helps us spread awareness of our mission!
SARAH HOSTS HAPPY HOUR BUNCO FOR AMPLIFY AUSTIN DAY
Our March Mission Ambassador, Sarah, also hosts games of Bunco around the city. It's another way she builds connections with her community.
Sarah generously hosted a few rounds of Bunco at our Amplify Austin Happy Hour held March 4th. The game, played with dice, kept our happy hour attendees on their toes, all in support of our wonderful mission. The event was a success! And so was Amplify Austin Day. With the support of our generous community, we raised over $89,000 to support home-delivered meals and other life-enriching services.
