If you're age 70½ or older and have a traditional IRA, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly to Meals on Wheels Central Texas. Your gift may reduce taxable income while supporting our mission.

How an IRA Gift Can Benefit You

  • The gift is not counted as taxable income.
  • It can count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD) if you're age 73 or older.
  • It may lower your adjusted gross income, which could reduce taxes on Social Security benefits and Medicare costs.
  • You receive the full tax benefit even if you don't itemize your deductions.

A Few Rules to Know

For 2026, you can give up to $111,000 from your IRA through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), or up to $222,000 for married couples giving from separate IRAs. IRS limits may change each year, so confirm the current amount or consult your advisor.

  • You must be age 70½ or older on the date of your gift.
  • The gift must go directly from your IRA to Meals on Wheels Central Texas.
  • QCDs can only be made from IRAs, not 401(k) or 403(b) accounts.
  • QCDs cannot be made to donor-advised funds or private foundations.

Frequently asked questions

Anyone 70½ or older with a traditional IRA. You do not have to be taking required withdrawals yet.

Yes. If you are 73 or older, a qualified charitable distribution can count toward your required minimum distribution for the year, up to the amount you give.

With this kind of gift, the money never counts as taxable income, even if you do not itemize. Taking the withdrawal yourself and then donating can leave you with a higher tax bill. Your advisor can compare the two for your situation.

Not directly. These gifts come from IRAs. You can roll 401(k) or 403(b) funds into an IRA first if you would like to give this way.

Give your IRA custodian enough time to send the gift before December 31. It counts in the year we receive it, so do not wait until the last week of December.
